BROOKINGS, SD – With its business roots beginning in Brookings, Furniture Mart USA has made a financial commitment to First Bank & Trust Arena. Furniture Mart USA, a company founded 45 years ago, has joined support of the new arena project at South Dakota State University.
The Furniture Mart USA showroom will serve as a hospitality space on the east side of the First Bank & Trust Arena as part of the Furniture Mart USA project contribution. The area will provide another premium experience for Jackrabbit fans, keeping viewers close to the action.
Furniture Mart USA founder Bill Hinks not only developed his business acumen as a student at South Dakota State University, but also ran a Texaco gas station while on campus. His experience added the mobile home business to his portfolio while at Brookings. His next venture eventually led him to his current business. His first furniture store opened in Sioux Falls in 1977 and from there the business prospered.
Furniture Mart USA today has over 50 stores in a six state region.
“First Bank & Trust, including Bob and Van Fishback, helped a new furniture company get off the ground and grow quickly,” Hinks said. “We needed a bank and First Bank & Trust was a great supporter. They helped our company become very successful. The Furniture Mart USA name emerged after a few years of growth.”
Hinks’ time in Sioux Falls allowed him to become a supporter of Jackrabbit Athletics over the years. He has always had a passion for basketball and his relationship with friends and alumni loyal to the state of South Dakota has always been prevalent since his days when his burgeoning professional career began. In addition, Bill and his wife Carolyn are also supporters of the School of Performing Arts. They were honored as Friends of Pride 2022 for their donation towards the performance of Pride at Macy’s upcoming Thanksgiving Day parade.
The gift to the First Bank & Trust Arena includes the name of another South Dakota incorporated company to be displayed at the Jackrabbit Athletics home, as well as various other events hosted by SDSU and the Brookings community.
“My fondest memory of Frost Arena was the people and the tremendous growth across all sports at SDSU,” said Hinks. “Having the opportunity to follow that growth has created many lasting friendships for me.”
Construction and renovation of the First Bank & Trust Arena began earlier this summer, with the project expected to last two years. Significant funds have already been generated from private donors and industry partners. The arena project is part of the SDSU Foundation’s Bold & Blue campaign, the largest comprehensive campaign in South Dakota State University’s history.
