Defeated South Dakota State Women’s Basketball in the second round of Battle4Atlantis

PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS — The Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-3) lost 75-56 to RV/RV South Dakota State in the second round of Battle4Atlantis Sunday night.

Despite the decision, Kaylene Smikle had a career day, recording 22 points and five threes to lead the Scarlet Knights.

How it happened

  • The teams traded points to start the competition as Sidibe, Cornwell and Carter scored points.
  • South Dakota State shot well from the field and hit a pair of early threes to give the 14-6 lead in the media’s 4:35 timeout.
  • After the stop, Smikle conceded in a big three-point play, followed by a shot from deep to reduce the deficit to three points, 14-11.
  • With just under 40 seconds to go, both teams went beyond three minutes without finding a bucket. The Jack Rabbits ended the drought with free throws while Smikle hit a three just before the buzzer. South Dakota State ended the first quarter with a slight 16-14 lead.
  • The Jack Rabbits started scoring in the second quarter, but Smikle remained aggressive, hitting her second three-pointer of the day on RU’s first possession. The newcomer followed up with another shot from deep to improve to 3v3 from beyond the arc to start the match.
  • The Jack Rabbits held the lead halfway through the second 10 minutes at the media timeout, 23-22.
  • After the break, the team continued to trade baskets, keeping the score within a point until the 2:30 mark.
  • However, the Jacks finished the first half strong, scoring five unanswered points to retain the 32-26 advantage.
  • After halftime, South Dakota State scored with its first three possessions to extend its lead to 40-26, forcing a timeout for the Scarlet Knights.
  • However, Brown had the answer, capitalizing on back-to-back layups to take the score to 12.
  • South Dakota State finished third in front, 56-34.
  • At the beginning of the last third, Lafayette put Rutgers on the board first with a pull-up jumper. The Jack Rabbits followed with back-to-back results to force an early RU timeout.
  • Cornwell came out of the stop with another three-point play for the Scarlet Knights, followed by a bucket from Smikle to level the score at 64-44.
  • The Jacks went on a 6-0 run to the 3:30 mark. Lafayette finished the stretch with two free throws and Smikle continued, hitting her fifth three-pointer of the competition.

  • Smikle set career highs with 22 points and five three-pointers. She was also the first Scarlet Knight of the season to reach 20+ points this campaign.
  • RU has been solid in the first six competitions of the season from the charity strip, with a 73.6 percent overall shooting percentage for the season. On Sunday, RU shot 77.8 percent (7 of 9) off the line.
  • The Rutgers beat South Dakota State on points on turnovers (13-10), on fast breaks (7-6) and off the bench (31-18).

Rutgers will play its third and final match in the Battle4Atlantis tournament on Monday, November 21st. The team plays at 5:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. either against No. 3/5 Texas or No. 6/4 Louisville
