The 116th meeting between Iowa and Minnesota takes place on Saturday. The Hawkeyes have won seven straight games and 17 of the last 21 in the series. During the seven-game winning streak, five games were decided by a touchdown or fewer. The Gophers lead the all-time streak, 62-51-2. Iowa is 32-26-1 in games played in Minneapolis. Iowa has won 10 straight at home and three straight on the road against the Gophers. Minnesota’s last win of the series came in 2014 — a 51-14 win in Minneapolis.
The Hawkeyes have won seven straight games and 17 of their last 21 games against Minnesota. The last time Floyd of Rosedale didn’t spend the winter in Iowa City was in 2014 after a 51-14 win over Golden Gopher.
The Golden Gophers rank eighth in the country by allowing 274.0 total yards per contest. They also have the No. 4 defense in scoring (13.1 ppg), the No. 8 in passing yards allowed (167.3), and the No. 13 rush defense (106.8). Minnesota is the only team in the nation, along with Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State and Michigan, to place 13th or better in each of those categories.
Mohamed Ibrahim has rushed 238 times for 1,261 yards (5.3 average) and 18 touchdowns in nine games this season. He posted those numbers despite missing the Purdue contest and not playing past the opening second-half drive in any of the first three contests this season. In the process, he’s extended his streak of 100-yard rushing plays to 18 straight games, stretching back to the 2020 Outback Bowl. According to ESPN, Ibrahim’s streak is the longest by an FBS player since 2000.
During the current streak, Ibrahim has rushed 489 times for 2,640 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has averaged 5.40 yards per rush and 146.7 yards per game over that span and has added 14 catches for 99 yards. He had three games for 200+ yards during his streak, 12 games with at least two rushing touchdowns, six games with three or more points, and a pair of four-TD games, tying Minnesota’s single-game record.
Kaleb Johnson led Iowa for the second straight season and fourth season this season, finishing with 57 yards against the Badgers. Johnson has a best 610 rushing yards with five touchdowns this season — 28 yards shy of Tyler Goodson’s freshman rushing record.
LB Jack Campbell had 11 tackles against Wisconsin which gave him 100 tackles in 2022. It’s the second year in a row that Campbell has had more than 100 tackles when he led the nation with 143 stops a year ago. He is the first Hawkeye since Josey Jewell (2015, 2016, 2017) to have 100 or more tackles in consecutive seasons.
Iowa’s defense has held seven opponents to 10 points or fewer this season, including three with three points or fewer. It is the first time since 1991 that the defense has held seven opponents under 10 points. This team finished 10-1-1 and played in the Holiday Bowl.
