Although TCU has already snagged a spot in the Big 12 title game, there’s a lot more at stake in this one. A win this game and a win next week will secure a playoff spot for a Horned Frogs team that was 28-1 going into the season to win the conference. Coach Sonny Dykes has this team buy into a mission and QB Max Dugan leads the charge.
Duggan and RB Kendre Miller have continued to drive a team with a fighting instinct to consistently come back from deficits and pick up unlikely wins. This continued on Saturday with a 22-second field goal practice at the end of regulation to forge a 29-28 win over Baylor. What looked hectic from a distance was all part of a well-established plan for TCU. That definitely made for exciting football.
Iowa State has reached heights it has never known under coach Matt Campbell. While defense is still strong this season (16.5 points allowed per game, No. 8 nationally), offense is struggling without last year’s stars QB Brock Purdy and RB Breece Hall. The duo were drafted into the NFL after the 2021 season.
Averaging 20.7 points per game, the Cyclones will have a hard time keeping up with TCU, who have averaged 39.5 points overall.

Iowa State on TCU picks and predictions
TCU 24, State of Iowa 20
TCU (-390) isn’t worth the juice, although it takes this game and will win. Spending nearly four times your payout isn’t good value for a single bet, but this is a solid game to add to a combo.
against the spread
Bet State of Iowa +9.5 (-105).
That’s just too many points in a game where not many points are scored.
TCU will win, but with the type of defense the Cyclones are playing I don’t see a great score from either side. Iowa State will continue to use the running game, forcing TCU to have fewer drives and therefore fewer scoring chances.
I don’t see this game getting out of hand and taking 9.5 points with the underdog. State of Iowa +9.5 (-105) is my favorite game.
BET UNDER 47 (-107).
Iowa State can screw up games with the best of them and is 2-9 under; TCU games are only 6-5 to the end.
The state of Iowa will slow this game down to a crawl and TCU will not allow Duggan and Miller to score points. Iowa State is playing good running defense while the Horned Frogs will want to use Miller to get through this game and into the Big 12 title game. That will be quick. In Fort Worth there is a lot of hustle and few points in the game.
