The Iowa Hawkeyes are on a four-game winning streak en route to their final regular-season game of the year against Nebraska.
Iowa will win the Big Ten West with a win over the Cornhuskers, who have beaten the Hawkeyes in seven straight encounters.
According to Caesars Sportsbook, the Hawkeyes have emerged as nine-point favorites over Nebraska while Friday’s matchup awaits them. When the Hawkeyes beat the Cornhuskers in Iowa City next Friday, Iowa will be the Big Ten West Champion and play in the Big Ten Championship for the second straight season. It would be Iowa’s third participation in a Big Ten Championship game since 2015.
“I didn’t say a word about it,” the Iowa head coach said Kirk Ference said Saturday when asked if he had mentioned Iowa’s Big Ten West odds to his team. “I know our lads know because it was brought to them by members outside on Tuesday and I imagine everyone is talking about it I suppose. Our boys know what’s going on.”
“Last week’s message was none of that if we couldn’t get by seven [wins] in this week. So that was our goal, to win our fourth game since we left Columbus. That was really our focus now. That way it becomes a really meaningful game. You’re always hoping to play for something in November.”
“I don’t know about gambling, but I guess if you gave us $10 four weeks ago, you’d probably be okay. It probably would have been a good deal.”
The Huskers are 3-8 on the season with a 2-6 conference record and currently have a head coach under interim tag Mickey Josephwho then took over Scott Frost was released earlier this fall.
Nebraska is currently on a five-game losing streak, with three of its four losses to Big Ten West in double digits, including a 15-14 home loss to Wisconsin this Saturday.
Iowa has won seven straight encounters against the Huskers, but the last four matchups have all been decided by single digits, including last year’s game in which Nebraska held a lead over the Hawkeyes for much of the contest.
Iowa and Nebraska are scheduled to launch Friday, November 25 at 3:00pm CT on the Big Ten Network. The ESPN Matchup Predictor gives the Hawkeyes an 82.9 percent chance of winning.
The Big Ten East crown will also be decided next week. Ohio State and Michigan will face off in Columbus, Ohio as both teams have unbeaten records going into the big game.
