The matchup
Nebraska wraps up its 2022 season on Friday when the Huskers take on Iowa in the schools’ annual Black Friday bout. The game time at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa is scheduled for just after 3:00 p.m. with television broadcasts on BTN.

Nebraska goes into the contest with a 3-8 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Big Ten play. The Huskers suffered another major setback on Saturday when Wisconsin escaped Lincoln in a 15-14 win. Nebraska held a 14-3 lead heading into the final quarter, but the Badgers engineered two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter for the win. The loss marked Nebraska’s fifth loss of the season by seven points or fewer, including four in Big Ten play.

Iowa enters the competition with its best football of the 2022 season. The Hawkeyes have won four straight games to position themselves for a second straight Big Ten West Division crown and a trip to the Big Ten championship game. Iowa is 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten game, and a win on Friday will earn the Hawkeyes a spot in the December 3 conference title game in Indianapolis.

Held at every turn by one of the best defenses in the nation, Iowa allows just 13.5 points and 273.3 yards per game. The Hawkeye defense has held nine of 11 opponents to 13 points or fewer this season, while scoring four defensive touchdowns.

The teams will fight for the Heroes Trophy for the 12th time in a row on Friday afternoon. Iowa has won the last seven meetings of the series. Games have been close in recent seasons, with the Hawkeyes winning by a touchdown or fewer in each of the past four years.

Series History: Nebraska vs. Iowa
Friday’s game marks the 53rd all-time meeting between the two schools and the 12th matchup as Big Ten Conference opponents. Nebraska leads the all-time series 29-20-3, while Iowa has held an 8-3 lead since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011. The Hawkeyes have won their last seven encounters, dating back to a 2014 Husker win at Kinnick Stadium.

• Each of the last four meetings in the series was decided by seven points or fewer. Iowa scored game-winning field goals in the last five seconds in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019 and rebounded from a 15-point deficit in the second half of last year at Lincoln.

• The road team has won seven of the last 10 meetings of the series, including NU wins in Iowa City in 2012 and 2014.

• The schools met 35 times before 1946 but only played six times between 1946 and 2011, when the Huskers joined the Big Ten. Nebraska was ranked in the top seven nationally in each of those six encounters and had a 5-1 record in those matchups.

Nebraska, Iowa for the Battle for Heroes Trophy
Nebraska and Iowa will battle it out for the Heroes Trophy at Kinnick Stadium on Friday. The Heroes Game is the annual trophy game between Nebraska and Iowa. The game is sponsored by Scheels.

• While both teams aim to win the trophy on the field, both Nebraska and Iowa wanted to make their annual meeting more than just a football game. With this in mind, the schools came together not only to create a trophy, but to use their stage to honor a civic hero from each state. In addition to the trophy claimed by the game’s winner, an Iowa and Nebraska native is honored for exceptional feats. These individuals will be announced later this week.

Big Red on Black Friday
Nebraska will continue its longstanding tradition of playing the day after Thanksgiving. This Friday’s game against Iowa marks the 33rd straight season the Huskers have played on Black Friday.

• Nebraska faced Oklahoma in the final six seasons of the Big Eight (1990-1995) and then played Colorado in all 15 years of the Huskers’ Big 12 (1996-2010) before facing Iowa in each of those 12 seasons is a Big Ten member, again this year.

• Nebraska has gone 9-6 in Black Friday games since 1990, including 2-3 in Iowa.

• Nebraska and Iowa not only played Black Friday in Iowa for the last 11 seasons, but also played each other nine times in the regular season between 1892 and 1916.

This week’s numbers
56 – Senior edge rusher Caleb Tannor will play his 56th game in Nebraska on Friday. He will tie the school record for games held by Cameron Meredith (2008-12). Tannor has played in every game since arriving on campus in 2018.

33 – Nebraska is playing Black Friday for the 33rd consecutive year since 1990. The Huskers have faced Iowa on Thanksgiving Friday for the past 12 seasons, and before that played Colorado (1996-2010) and Oklahoma (1990-95).

7 – The duel between Nebraska and Iowa has been decided by seven points or fewer in each of the last four seasons. Iowa had three points wins on back-to-back last-second field goals in 2018 and 2019, winning by six and seven points respectively in the last two seasons.
